Tropical Tower Wars on Dota 2

Post by cReepX on 6/7/2014, 04:37

Hi!
I'm starting this thread to know if you guys are willing to release a TTW Version on Dota 2 since there are already custom mods. You can find them on d2modd.in.
Please reply! I want this so bad!

Regards!

Re: Tropical Tower Wars on Dota 2

The short answer to this question is; "probably not". Although this question comes up quite frequently, we haven't really given solid reasoning; up until now it's still been something to experiment with.

We've been looking into Dota 2 as a platform for a while now, personally, I can't tell you how excited I was when the custom maps (d2modd.in) was announced. As you might expect, our first reaction was; "Get TTW onto Dota2 ASAP". I mean, there are a lot of really obvious pros about it, the fact that it has a huge player base where a large portion of the players know about / played TTW, should have been enough. It's TTWs natural evolution, right?

Well, yes and no. Once you start trying to put something onto it you start to see the requirements.

Let's look at TTW, in the latest version there were 37 builders and 41 creeps/bosses, with several teetering on release. Those don't seem big numbers, Dota had 112 heroes after all. In reality, these 37 builders equated to ~270 towers (I counted Tongue), that's over 300 (preferably unique) models, which Dota 2 has far fewer.
- 'You could use custom sets to splice together more towers / models.'; We could, if we got permissions, which isn't always possible.
- 'You could make your own models and put them in.'; This would make the "custom map" size massive. It would literally be the size of a decent game. Also with those models we may as well be making our own game. (Oh yeah, we are).
Keep in mind that models are only a portion (albeit probably the largest) of the "assets problem".

Let's look at some of the vital mechanics, it's like having a spine free from back problems, or functional limbs; pathing. In Dota 2, have you ever clicked somewhere on the map only to see your hero run past 3 towers, into the enemy base, and out the other side? Probably not. Unless you're a fat Timbersaw, Bloodseeker with 800ms or other such heroes, you're probably dead, wondering if that really was the best / shortest path for your hero to have taken. But your squishy Crystal Maiden definitely tried it once or twice. Now imagine that with 100 creeps in a cramped maze.
- Again we could make our own pathing, but as such, we may as well put it in our own game.
Warcraft 3's engine was actually built for lots of units being pathed at once, and still is struggled with some creep waves. Dota 2's pathing is less than ideal to say the least.

Graphicswise most mid-tier computers suffer during complex teamfights with illusion heroes, lots of effects and dying creeps - even with reduced graphics. Imagine trying to watch 60 towers beat the stuffing out of 100 or so creeps, while juggling, on the shiny Dota 2 graphics engine.
(Reminds me of LeafMuncher's laptop threating to combust after round 30 Laugh).
- 'I would reduce my graphics setting everytime just to play TTW, I swear it!'; Unfortunately it would be a case of "You and what army". I'd rather play Pudge wars and not melt my GPU. Most people are lazy (YES! I'm pointing at myself too, okay Tongue).

Hmmm, this post is getting rather large... I could give more examples, but I think you should be getting the idea.

At the end of the day, the more we fiddled with Dota 2 and custom maps, the more limiting it felt, and the more we wanted to make our own game.
And what fun could be had with it! Imagine a TTW game where you could make your own custom maps / TD games Wink.

I understood 1 thing, Developers don't make more versions TTW in WC3, and they include TTW in DOTA 2.This shocks me , everything we've done, is in vain , and now I think it is useless to try to make this map popular- WHY simple reason Developers "die"???
And it's not just about me ,I remember many strong games when was released version 5.50 .Then even had to fight for what, but now, whenever I try to gather people for a strong game, the more likely I will not do that.Course is a great luck for you, TTW is playing on 2 hosbots (mog13 and hodovoi) only in Europe, Asia or Africa do not know.
I do not know what you plan, as you have said, TTW in DOTA 2 will not do.
Like I said WC3 versions will not be, do not you believe that is the time to search people who want to further develop TTW, until you sit in the shade???
I guess you will think about it, and more I give you a hint, Mog can deal with it.
TTW slowly dies, like DOTA in WC3, if will appear new versions of TTW, this may place them! ! !

"I understood 1 thing"; you understand nothing Smile.
"I do not know what you plan"; it's like you haven't read anything up until this point. I almost didn't want to reply.

Here's a nice concise bullet point reply;
1) We will be making a TTW.
2) This will be a standalone version, probably released through Steam.
3) WC3 TTW is dead.
4) Garena doesn't host WC3 any more, this is where most TTW was played.
5) A new WC3 TTW version? To what end?

Reality check;
We are not a company, we are individuals, all of us (3) are studying (with difficult degree(s)), working or both.
In no way do we get paid for TTW, so in order for us to buy food (amongst other things Tongue) we need to get a real job.

DotA 2 doesn't have the particles for this type of game I believe H3ka stated that to you nicely.

I would love to play some TTW again, it's hard to find any servers that actually have a TTW community still on WC3 but hey let's face reality TTW died on all those servers because of SC2 and DotA 2 just overrunning the communities.

If there could be a standalone for TTW just think of all the possibilities it can open up... Custom skins and stuff that users can buy for the Developers to make some money from it at least.

But in the future we'll see what happens I really hope we can get TTW going again and build a bigger community

You know money can make everything possible Smile

I disappeared for long time, and came back again just for ttw Smile

Try collecting money, open donation and then start creating the map for dota 2 Smile ill be waiting for it

So you're going to pay Valve to make you more models? You don't seem to understand what they discussed here by the looks of it.

It's a lot less effort to make your own game that to try and make it based on DotA 2 particles. DotA 2 has a type of a mazing idea but it's not nearly as complex as TTW mazing and paths.

Question - what coding language would be the most ideal to create a standalone platform for TTW?

As much as building an engine (platform) from scratch would be fun, I think we'd be seeing TTW in the next century then Wink.
As such, we're using a (mostly) complete platform. For interest's sake, we're working in C#.

Haha no ways, building a new engine/platform for TTW is a bit of a crazy move I agree.

My CTO says that C# is possibly the worst coding language ever created and advised using Jscript instead but not quite sure if that will work.

Whichever way I'm keen to commit some time in helping bring TTW into the new era. I logged onto Twilight the other night and the server is totally dead, so TTW and all the really awesome custom maps are dead in the water...very sad.

Keep me in the loop if there are any plans. Will look forward to help out and test.

I've been nagging H3ka for quite some time really want to play but he's so slow Tongue

He could've been rich by now if only he did graphic designing and everything during the day and then at night he can work further Tongue

The day there is a new TTW to play everyone will know of this

Let me say this. If, by any any miracle TTW could be made on the Dota 2 custom games engine, it would quickly become the number 1 game out there. I tried a couple of the already available games including Green TD and they are seriously bad and unplayable lol.

What are you guys playing these days in your spare time?

I just play BF4 once or twice a week with colleagues and then a dota 2 every now and again. Tried out that Wildstar MMO. Was fun but I think they trying too hard to be the next WoW. Stopped playing that. Star Citizen or Elite: Dangerous as space sims looking good.

Well we could always try SC2 but the models are still an issue... (Because SC2 Arcade is free for anyone to play) If you by any chance know a good 3D graphic designer please let us know if he wants to use his spare time for a good cause Tongue

I play DotA, CS:GO, BF4 and SC2 mostly lately... Been playing all types of Tower Defenses to try and fill the void but nothing will work except TTW (:

Re: Tropical Tower Wars on Dota 2

I rise from the dead.
SC2 is a VERY long shot. I spent most of my 1st year at varsity building the terrain for the map as well as trying to make the units. The Map editor is incredibly powerful, but it's really confusing and complicated, so I'd have had to spend more time learning this stuff blah blah I lost my train of thought. Anyway, SC2 was going to be a mission so we (myself and H3ka) decided to drop that option. H3ka has been planing to make a stand-alone since the end of 2011, but because varsity is a real thing, he didn't often have time to dedicate himself to it's dev.

I'm not sure what happening lately with the dev, as I no longer live in the same province as H3ka and thus no longer see him as often as I used to (every damned day, lol - now it's like twice every 6 months), but H3ka and D3z (I'm pretty sure D3z is still in on this dev) are currently working on the essential mechanics such as pathing and region algorithims.

Token, dude, C# is one of the better languages to do a project such as this in. If H3ka wasn't such a bitch I'd do it in C+ though, but that shizz is more confusing than life itself.

Anyways, I jam some Dota 2 every now and then, along with a load of single player games and GW2 when I can. Otherwise I'm otherwise occupied with staying alive Tongue

*descends back into the grave*

I'm happy that TTW isn't completely dead Smile

I really hope it ends up being a good game, although I doubt it will have the same feel as the WC3 map had.

Maybe it's me, but WC3 has something special in it that I haven't seen in any other game.
Is there any hope that the current bugs in TTW will ever get fixed? They aren't alot, but still.
