Recommend Anime

Post by LeafMuncher on 14/3/2011, 16:20

Simple recommendation topic. Only recommend series that have been completed (in other words series you know have a good end Tongue) so nothing on-going please. Also not too many at a time.

If you don't mind loli's without fanservice, heavy violence combined with psychotic rage, or a storyline that will keep you awake at night trying to piece it together, try this series:

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni ("When the cicadas cry" in English) - Amazing mystery/thriller, repeats itself as if certain events take place differently, revealing the main plot bit by bit.
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai - 2nd series, answers wtf is going on in 1st series, starts with filler though.
On a side note, to those asking about my avatar (crazy chick with green hair), she's one of the characters from Higurashi.

If you like metal, don't mind vulgarity, or just wanna piss yourself laughing:

Detroit Metal City (DMC) - Basically its about a guy who moves to Tokyo, wanting to join a trendy pop band, playing happy music. Instead, somehow, he ends up as the front-man for a satanic deth-metal band.

If you would rather watch a more serious (and less vulgar) version of DMC, I recommend:

BECK - Boy meets rock star, boy falls in love with girl from school, boy learns to play guitar, boy joins band, boy falls in love with friend's sister, ????, profit! Overall awesome series, very catchy songs, great story.

One Piece. Crazy anime with adventure. Age of Pirates. Superpowers after taking the devil fruit. Stretching the body, ice, magma, rays of light, electricity, turning into animals. A lot of humor. An interesting plot, a device in the world.

One piece is the only lengthy anime that gets better over time, first 100 or so episodes aren't quite as amazing as other series (worth watching though), but once you hit early 200's you WILL get addicted (Just skip the Foxxy Pirates, all I'm saying).

Re: Recommend Anime

Post by Sympathic on 10/11/2013, 09:38

People come on... one piece or fullmetal alchemist are animes probably everyone knows, just like death note or code geass, sword art online, naruto, darker then black, the .hack series and many more.

I can remember a few some people may not know or definitely won´t know...

Star Ocean Ex is a good one. The only reason I know it and watched it is because I played the PS 1 game of it(Star Ocean the Second Story). However it may be a good anime, but stops at the half when it actually gets very interesting. Still worth watching. Storyline is okay to good depending on your taste, outstanding are the graphics, very well drawn. It plays in the future when technology is far more developed and features a human(Claude) who is a Soldier from earth and on a spacemission with his father who is a high ranking general. He touches a device that transports him directly to a different planet(Expel) at a random place. From that point he struggles to get back to his ship and home, but learns that he plays an important role in an old legend and the disruptions that happen on Expel. I wont say more due to spoilers, however but due to the fact its incomplete many questions will stay unanswered and it´s quite the takedown that the series stops in the middle just when the story reaches its climax. Contains mainly action, adventure and drama, a little bit romance and at times epic comedy to. It has 26 episodes.

Nabari No Ou: It features ninjas and the old ways of the ninjas facing a new era in which ninjas as well as samurai slowly die out due to modernization(fireweapons i.e. guns, explosives etc) and a young heritage from a famous ninja clan, though he himself totally rejects that role, doesn´t want to be the next heir and is not happy with it. Very good anime, could be better but i´d rank it as one of the best. Mainly action, psychology, mystery and drama, with a bit of comedy in it to. It has 24 episodes in total.

Probably quite a few people know this one, but there are many who dont: Rurouni Kenshin. It features a legendary samurai who has been in a great battle and was so strong, that he earned the tittle of "manslayer". Only the best and very few samurai are titled "manslayers" like kenshin. Kenshin however stoped beeing a brutal and coldhearted manslayer or killer, and dedicated his life to the peaecefull way of the sword. Hence he uses a "reversed blade", a blade that is dull and cannot cut or kill, but still knock out his opponents when its neccessary. It also plays in the time when freelancing samurais(ronins) were outlawed and only by the government approved samurai could wield a sword. Well kenshin is not with the government anymore, thus he is not allowed to use a sword. And as he meets a woman, she suspects him and then stalks him while kenshin attempts to stay hidden and flee, but that woman is hardy, good at stalking and follows him. And so the story slowly beginns. This anime is long(about 100 eps or a bit more) and very good.

Ninja Scroll is an old classic that was famous but is not so known in the younger generations of anime watchers. It features a samurai in the old japanese times who is extremely quick and cuts with sharp wind mainly, instead of his sword actually, by unleashing godlike speed he creates a sharp wind that virtually cuts nearly everything. The main character by coincidence meets with a princess who is honest but on the run, and he vows to protect and guide her to her destiny, which is easier said then done, and so the story enfolds. Its short and only has 13 episodes. Especially outstanding is the music and the totally epic drawings, one of the best I have ever seen, the scenerys can only be descrbed as epic. And though this anime plays in old times, it also features mysteric and unnatural or non really human beeings, and a kind or "primitive but advanced" japanese technique, similiar to the "steampunk" theme(if you dont know google it and you willl understand), only that this doesn´t feature old but ahead of their time high tech steam machines and devices, but in this case japanese ones that would be totally ahead of their time considering the age in which the anime plays. Thus you will also have weird technology of wood and steel, and rarely even creatures built dependant of it or made of it.

Jigoku Shojo or also known as "hell girl". Unknown by many people, but very good. Its about a special website that can only be accessed at midnight at 00:00, and only remains active for half an hour. One may write ones own name, and the name of the person one wishes to send to hell, i.e. with this also kill that person, on the website. But it only works if the writer harbors true hatred for the person whose name is written, it won´t work otherwise. If all conditions are met, a representative of hell will visit the person and offer him or her a contract: He or she(the contractor) can send the hated person(the victim) directly to hell, but must also pay a price: They will get a black curse mark or reffered to as "black hole" on their chest that will never vanish, like a permanent tattoo. And no matter what the contractor does, he or she will go to hell after he or she dies, even if that person leads the most noble life. However the contractor himself can live a normal life, until death were he or she will go to hell no matter what. The contractor has no chance to go to heaven at all. This anime features 3 seasons with 24 or 26 episodes each season.

Samurai Seven. Another mostly forgotten old school anime, that was extremely popular back days, but nowadays was nearly totally forgotten. Its about 2 people that are essentially one. One teenage boy and 1 grownup highly skilled samurai, they both are the same or one person. Whilst they boy is clumsy, goodhearted and naive, his older comparison is agile, skilled, coldhearted and sharp minded. Eventually the adult form takes over and totally dominates in personality later. It has one of the best effects and drawings and totally outstands in these categories. The plot and storyline are good to, definitely worth watching.

Crest of stars: A futuristic anime, in which mankind has technologically developed and space travels and colonies are normal. It features a special kind of new beeings, the so called "abhs". A race of humans who were genetically enginered by a small group of ultra-nationalist japanese who fled into space ans used machines and computers for genetic engeenering, they colonized a moon and created this race. They planed to use this race, the abhs, as slaves for themselves, which they did in the beginning. However, those computers were highly intelligent, and developed their own will in the creation of the abh race. Therefore the abhs were far smarter and in many ways superior to humans and their own creators, a twist which the ultra-nationalist japanese had not foresaw that would happen. This led to a group of abhs rebelling, then fleeing to a different planet. They built up an army and then later returned to the japanese to wipe out their slaveholders and free their abh bretheren, with success. Since then abhs set out to different planets, building theyre own culture, technology, traits, personality, language and empires. Further the abhs are very adapted to space, and often feel more home in space then on planets, have blue hair, are very intelligent and live very long. In character they are on one hand very social, on the other also very cold, calculating, distant and rational. The abhs grew strong and quickly, and over time they could compete with all of human kind, leading to the abhs slowly conquering more and more of humankind and human colonies, not in order to enslave but passively rule them, to stop the endless conflict and wars between humans amongst themselves, but under the leadership of the abhs, and this so long until humankind is developed enough to stand on their own feet without making war constantly. The anime itself takes place in that conflict, where abhs and humans are at war. A part of humanity has been occupied by the abhs and is positive toward them, the other half is against the abhs and the abh empire and battles them fiercly. The anime itself features a human son of a president whose father and colony was positive towards the abhs, therefore he is considered an abh royal or at least partly an abh royal himself and is greeted warmly by the abhs. And an abh princess whom he meets on a mission, they get in trouble during the mission and strugle for survival, thus the rest of the story enfolds. There is not much to no comedy, but it contains lots of psychology, politics, action and a bit of drama and romance. And beneath politics and war it also especially features prejudice and cultural differences. It has 3 seasons but be warned: The first season is very good, the second is okay, and the 3rd is really crap which is sad. At least season 1 and 2 are worth watching, but season 3 is a total letdown, even if its interesting how the story develops further.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes or "Ginga Eiyu Densetsu": Its a very oldschool and totally unknown anime, I only watched it because a japanese online friend recommended it and it was worth watching to the last episode. Again a futuristic one, in which humankind colonizes the space under a blooming monarchy(the Galactic Empire) and a strong dynasty(the goldenbaum dynasty). Despite the strong aristocracy and oppresion that comes with the goldenbaum dynasty, and the fact that monarchs are humans too and that some monarchs of course are incompetent whilst others are geniuses, the galactic empire itself is blooming economically and military. However freedom and democracy are nonexistant, and people from the lower classes often suffer under this monarchy, especially the leading goldenbaum dynasty is very corrupt. Opposed to the monarchy is a confederation of democratic free states(Free Planets Alliance), which are people who got together and managed to flee from the monarchic empire and the dynasty, and far away they started to build theyre own colonies and states, like the Galactic Empire they quickly grew in strength and number with a blooming economy and military. However like the Galactic Empire, the Alliance of Free States has its shadow sides and oppresions to. Both sides are at a bitter war with each other. Ironically from both sides, a leader emerges that wishes to change the situation, make it better and fix the oppresions and shadow sides of theyre own side. On the side of the Galactic Empire the young "reinhard von lohengramm" emerges, takes over power and becomes the next imperator. His goal is to crush the corrupt goldenbaum dynasty and create a peacefull and benevolent monarchy. On the other side is the mid-aged veteran soldier "yang wenli" also reffered to as "miracle yang" due to his strategic genius. He also emerges and is supported by the people, and eventually like reinhard he takes over and becomes a leading figure in the Alliance of Free Planets. Like reinhard, he to wishes for peace and a benevolent democracy, fighting not only the Galactic Empire but also the corruption in his own alliance, just like reinhard fights the alliance of free planets and also the corruption of the goldenbaum dynasty on his own side. Thus both, reinhard and yang meet several times in politics as well as in battle, and both try their best to reach their goals, though both of them at times have doubt about their own positions and if their cause and actions are justified and right. Thus the story emerges and continues very long. This anime is long(more then 100 episodes, 120 or 130 or so), very very complicated, strategic, political and psychological. This anime is very unique and I personally have never seen anything comparable or similiar to it. If you dislike politics, strategy and psychology you will probably be bored, if you like it or have no problem with it you will definitely be entertained for a long time. And 1 more thing: Since this anime is extremely unknown, its very hard to find decent streams with subtitles for this one, but its worth the search. Somewhere I have several links that list all episodes with subs which I can cram out and send you via PN if you want. Oh and sidenote: as you may already guess, the dynasty itself features a german(prussian in this case) monarchy, hence the monarchy and all monarchs in this anime have german names, some which also contain at least parts of historical german names(like the last name "mariendorf" for example which I remember).

Featuring something totally different from the rest, "Kuroshitsuji" also known as "black butler" it features older times in england but not that old i´d say. It features a young monarch(ciel phantomhive) and his butler, however this butler is no ordinary one and is not human. He serves his young master loyaly, protects him and helps him complete his quests. The young master ciel is from the family of the "Phantom Hives". A dark and grim line of monarchy, which were always loyal to the queens and kings, but also mysterious, ominous, silent, reserved, closed up and simply what you would refer to as "dark", a lineage which works with dark beeings or forces to serve the monarchy from the shadows and take care of all kinds of jobs, mostly the "dirty jobs", that need operation from the shadows. In return for their service, loyality and often questionable work to, the phantom hive lineage is highly renown and protected by many monarch families, including the royals kings and queens line themselves. However this "black butler" whom also doesn´t really have a name nor is human, does not serve the young master out of free will, he has a contract with him which demands a certain repayment for his loyal service to the young phantom hive master after a certain time of service. The anime as said plays in england, is very well drawn and features a really well made typical old english style, including epic english landscapes, buildings, manors, culture and even recipes or meals etc. Its very dark and very grim and contains a lot of mystery mainly, as well as action, drama, a good portion of comedy and a little bit of adventure and horror to. It has 2 seasons about 24 or 26 episodes which are both good and worth watching, though the first season is slightly better then the second.

Most people should know this one, but its not that popular: Phi Brain. It combines puzzles like giant mazes or labyrinths, mind games and psychology with an "evil force", more precise a puzzle that seems to have no end, a deadly one to. While most puzzles arent deadly or life threatening, these ones are. And once you attempt to solve the first puzzle, you cannot escape from the other puzzles that follow, which are all life threatening and sinister to the person or persons trying to solve it. A very young adult and his master attempt to solve such a puzzle, not knowing of the devastating consequences that await them. While the master dies, the young one manages to survive the first puzzle, and swears to never again attempt such a dangerous puzzle. But its to late, he activated the first puzzle and solved it, hence he cannot escape all the challenging puzzles that await him, nor can he escape the sinister group of individuals that are behind those puzzles. Thus the story enfolds, as he must solve more and more puzzles, and over time more and more people help him or even join him in attempting to solve these puzzles. And even more plots and puzzles await them all... This anime has 2 seasons with 24 to 26 episodes, of which both are equally good, and it has a lot of mind games and psychology in it combined with good comedy and very individual characters to, action and drama are rare in this one.

Wow I wrote a lot already... time to come to an end. The last one on my list which I remember is Magi which only few people know: Away from ninjas or samurai, or futurism or german, english or european themes or mind games and psychology, this is one of the very few animes that features the middle east, the arabian theme and 1001 and 1 nights with lots of mystery, adventure and partly also magic/occult in it. It features the young sindbad, a beeing from a different plane of existence with his guide a powerfull djinn, and the young aladin a good hearted and hotblooded young adult human. Whilst sindbad was lonely in his plane with only his djinn as companion and only had in mind to meet people and make friends in the human world, alladin has high goals and seeks richdoms and fame. Since alladin wasn´t born in a wealthy family, but is agile, not stupid and adventurous, he seeks to solve labyrinths to reach his goal. Those who are able to solve a labyrinth, are rewarded with lots of richdoms and the fame too that comes automatically with not only the riches, but the fact that one is able to solve a complicated labyrinth, this is if you solve it and get out alive. Those labyrinths are deadly traps, and a place outside the human world which can be entered through portals, and only few people were ever able to solve such a laybrinth. And once entered there are only 2 ways to leave this labyrinth: Dead, or alive when you solve it with all the rewards. Both alladin and sindbad meet somehow, against alladins will in the beginning, and become companions temporarily and later even friends to. Beneath the middle-eastern arabien theme and adventure, this anime also features monarchy, arrogance, at times also selfishness, slavery and the cruelty of slavery. There is also little comedy in it, quite a lot of drama but not excessively much. It only has one season with 24 or 26 episodes which is definitely worth watching.

Probably there are some more I could recommend, but I dont remember them. However this list should be enough to keep you occupied for a while at least^^

I must add Mirai Nikki and Guilty Crown. Damn those were good and very much worth the watch and endurance of the insanity they contain.
